The Village School began in 1985 in a suite of offices on the first floor, above a parade of shops on Fortess Road, NW5, and was founded by Ms Fanny Prior, the first VS Headmistress, and Miss Carol Gay as Deputy Head. Reaching full capacity in Fortess Road, Ms Prior and Miss Gay acquired the beautiful property on 2 Parkhill Road, NW3 in 1993. The property required total refurbishment inside and out, and the Prep class opened in 1994. Not long after, a full-sized netball court and lawned play area with a fitness trail took shape, and the Prep class opened in 1994. A purpose-built theatre and school hall followed in 1999, with the generous support of the parent community.
Carol Gay took over the headship in 2007, with Mrs Ellen Bolsom as Deputy. The property was extended the following year to create the bright and spacious nursery and Reception area, giving the three youngest classes in the school direct access to the playground. After installing a kitchen for school lunches in 2012 as voted for by the parents, the most recent development of the site is The Village Green project – the exciting adventure equipment and outside classroom. The idea was suggested by the school council in 2016 and built in 2017, co-funded by the school and parents.
The vision has always been very clear: The Village School was created to educate girls to achieve without limits to their aspirations, with a practical, can-do attitude in an environment where learning is exciting, stimulating and fun. Kindness and consideration for others is at the heart of everything.
Miss Gay recounts “Outward bounds was always a very important part of learning at The Village; getting kids involved with regular heath visits for everyone, nature walks, shelter building and orienteering. We were a forest school before forest schools existed!”
The school motto: Ad Astra says it all – the partnership between the school, the parents and, most importantly, the girls, has seen old VS girls achieve in all walks of life.
